A Level English Literature at Bournemouth School for Girls

Course description

The course will build up an overview of English Literature through the ages and across the different forms (poetry, novels, plays) and will provide an excellent preparation for students wishing to study a broad range of subjects at university.

In AS English Literature students will study at least four texts in a variety of genres. The course takes an historicist approach, meaning that students explore how common themes and ideas are presented in Literature from different times, and what these texts reveal about the period in which they were written.  Assessment is by examination.

In A2, as well as continuing to study texts together, students will have an opportunity to select their own texts for comparison.  This leads to an extended piece of independent writing, and offers scope for investigating aspects of Literature in which the student has a particular interest.  There will also be two examinations at the end of the course.

Entry requirements

Anyone who enjoys reading analytically, thinking, listening, talking and writing. You need to have achieved at least a grade B in English GCSE and it would be helpful if you have a B or above in English Literature too – but the course is suitable for anyone who really enjoys studying literature.
