Further Mathematics at The Warriner School
Mathematics is one of the most marketable A-levels. It is difficult to think of any course/career where it would not be welcomed. The analytical, problem solving and logical thinking skills developed through A-level Mathematics are transferable to subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, History and Geography to name a few.
The MEI Mathematics and Further Mathematics courses give students the opportunity to experience maths in a range of contexts. The choice of modules offered will expose students to all strands of mathematics to ensure they are fully equipped should they wish to study mathematics beyond A-level. A-level Mathematics consists of six units of equal weighting. A-level Further Mathematics consists of an additional six units, again all of equal weighting. One module, Core 3, has a coursework element. The remaining modules are assessed through external examinations.
Core modules have a strong algebraic element to them and fluency in techniques covered on the GCSE course is expected. To help ensure this, students will be required to complete an AS transition work book before they start the course in September.
AS Further Mathematics is made up of three units – Further Pure 1, Mechanics 2 and Decision Mathematics.
A2 Further Mathematics has one compulsory unit: Further Pure 2
Students must have achieved Grade B or above for Maths and ideally grade A or above for Further Maths.
