Textiles A Level at Thurston Community College

Course description

Year One

Unit 1 (6TE01) Coursework: Thematic Enquiry: Working sequentially through a broad range of media processes and ideas towards well considered conclusions. You will develop an understanding of the expressive nature of the formal elements of Textiles.

Unit 2 (6TE02) Externally Set Timed Test: A specific amount of time given under exam conditions to produce an outcome based on an externally set theme with an advanced preparatory period.

Year Two

Unit 3 (6TE03) Coursework: Personal Contextual Study: To research, analyse and evaluate links between Textiles work of the past, other cultures and contemporary textile artists and fashion designers. Develop a personal ‘problem’ or theme that is explored and developed towards a range of solutions.

Unit 4 (6TE04) Externally Set Timed Test: A specific amount of time given under exam conditions to produce an outcome based on an externally set theme with an advanced preparatory period.

Entry requirements

Entry GCSE: B in Art & Design or Textile Design.

Essential: Portfolio of work and departmental interview.

Assessment

Both components are internally assessed and externally moderated in June, end of Year Two.

Future opportunities

A recognised qualification for degree courses. Several of our students have gained places on BA Courses without taking a Foundation Course. Careers in Fashion Design, Fashion Retailing and Management, Textile Design, Art Textiles, Interior Design and other creative industries. An ideal qualification for teaching at all levels.
