Course description

The main reason for studying Mathematics to an advanced level is that it is interesting and enjoyable. People like a challenge, maths has clarity and you know when you are right! The solution of a problem has an excitement and a satisfaction. You should also be aware of the wide importance of Mathematics and the way in which it is advancing at a spectacular rate. Mathematics has a pervasive influence on our everyday lives and contributes to the wealth of the country.

Course content

The core Mathematics is a selection of higher level algebra including co-ordinate geometry with traditional calculus and trigonometry. The statistics module overlaps with some GCSE content and delves further into looking at the mathematical models surrounding many theoretical probability and data driven situations. Decision Mathematics gives you an understanding of how processes can be optimised using analytical powers.

Entry requirements

GCSE Maths Grade B is the entry requirement. A full understanding of the more complex topics studied at GCSE such as solving quadratic equation, transformation of graphical functions and the more advanced trigonometry (using the sine and cosine rules) is also required.

Future opportunities

Many careers lend themselves to highly numerate individuals who succeed at A-Level maths, including (but not limited to) Actuarial work, Accountancy, Design Engineering and Medical Statistics.
