A Level Design and Technology at Lady Margaret School

Course description

You will study the traditional and latest developments in fibres, yarns and fabrics as well as gaining a working knowledge of the properties of fibres and fabrics whilst designing and making fashion garments using a range of different fabrics. There will be an emphasis on industrial practice throughout the whole course. Your garments will all be displayed in a Fashion Show which enables you to gain the opinions of other professionals working in the textiles industry to include in your design folders. You will learn about the care of fabrics and all the additional trimmings and components used to complete a textile product. In addition, you will study aspects of the History of Fashion and the many different roles/careers within the textiles industry, plus, the whole marketing side of the industry.

Entry requirements

There is no specialist requirement beyond the standard entry to Lady Margaret School Sixth Form. However, a Grade B or above in any of the Design & Technology GCSEs is an advantage.

Assessment

The AS will be examined through a design and make portfolio of course work (unit 2) and a 2 hour written examination (unit 1)

The A2 will be examined through one extended design and make project (unit 3) and a 2 hour written examination (unit 4).

Future opportunities

This course focuses on product design through textiles and can lead to further study at degree level and/or work related areas. The main emphasis of this course is on Fashion. However, all aspects of Textiles are addressed and a student with a particular interest in a Textile area other than Fashion, such as Interiors, will be able to embrace this. Textiles Technology is a developing field of study with ever increasing career opportunities.
