Information Communication Technology at Ribston Hall High School

Course description

At AS the two units are complementary and aim to develop students' ability to use ICT to solve problems, together with an understanding of the opportunities and impact of ICT in modern life. The practical work will focus on creating web-based resources using the latest Adobe software like Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop.

At A2 students study the concepts associated with the use of ICT in the real world, as well as making practical use of this knowledge. They will have the opportunity to create real web-based solutions for organisations in their coursework project.

Course content

AS Level
Unit 1 - Practical Problem Solving In the Digital World Practical use of ICT, identifying, designing, producing, testing documenting and evaluating solutions including websites and Flash animations. Assessment Unit 1- Written Paper. 1 hour 30 minutes, 50% of total AS, 25% of total Advanced Level marks.

Unit 2 - Living in the Digital World ICT systems, their components, uses, users, safety and security. We will look at threats to systems from viruses, hackers etc. and explore counter measures to these threats. Assessment Unit 2 - Written Paper, 1 hour 30 minutes, 50% of total AS, 25% of total Advanced Level marks

A2 Level
Unit 3 - The Use of 1CT in the Digital World Developments in technology, information needs of organisations, ICT systems, management of ICE. Developing ICE systems, Introducing large ICE systems into organisations. Training and supporting users of ICT systems. Assessment: Unit 3 - Written paper, 2 hours, 60% of total A2, 30% of total Advanced Level marks

Unit 4 • Practical issues involved In managing the use of ICT in organisations Students will find real clients and work with them to create real ICT solutions. Most students create web-based systems using the Joomla! content management system, which allows them to create interactive websites that can contain booking systems etc. Students will have the opportunity to combine skills in graphics, animation and web design to make visually appealing solutions to real problems. Assessment: Unit 4 - Coursework, 40% of total A2, 20% of total Advanced Level marks.
