Drama and Theatre Studies A Level at Rainford High Technology College

Course description

Essentially to study Drama at A Level you would need a passion for the theatre and play reading and the ability to work successfully in a team. This A Level has the best of both worlds, covering both the practical elements and theory in the form of a written exam.

Course content

Set text
This will include play reading, practical assignments, genre work and test essays. Students will also undertake character studies, design work, improvisations and time lines.

Entry requirements

A passion for the Arts and in particular the ability to work alone or as part of a team. The ability to perform and at least a C grade at GCSE.

Assessment

Component 1 Drama & Theatre written paper

  • 40% 80 Marks
  • 3 Hours: 3 sections
    Section A: set text 1 – (25 marks)
    Section B: set text 2 – (25 marks)
    (Section A & B are open book)
    Section C: live production – (30 marks)

Component 2 Creating Original Drama Practical coursework:

  • 30% 60 Marks
  • Devised performance – (20 marks) Working notebook – (40 marks)
  • Devised piece influenced by one prescribed practitioner

Component 3 Making Theatre practical coursework
Marked by AQA

  • 30% 60 Marks
  • Practical exploration of three key extracts from contrasting plays: one performance in the style of a second prescribed practitioner – (40 marks)
  • Reflective report – (20 marks)

Future opportunities

Students can embark upon a whole host of careers related to the drama world: acting, TV, theatre, film and also vocational work such as lighting technicians and make up practitioners. Students can find careers in local theatres as Front of House Managers, Box Office staff and T.I.E. practitioners in an educational setting.

Jobs can be found in almost any walk of life as Drama students are dynamic team players and effective communicators. Frequently students become teachers as Drama fits very well with the skills required. Finally many students find jobs in the world of media which is very closely linked to drama.
