History AS/A Level at South Holderness Technology College

Course description

History is a very popular choice at A level. History is the fascinating story of human behaviour; the actions and reactions that have shaped the world we live in today.

During the course you will have the opportunity to explore the origins of the some of the most significant events in history and to consider their impact.

The course will help you to develop your skills of analysis and interpretation, to make judgements and to communicate clearly and convincingly. These are skills which are becoming increasingly important to both universities and employers.

Course content

This subject syllabus has been designed to offer students the opportunity to select from a wide variety of periods and topics in English, European and World history, from the medieval to the late 20th century. They offer candidates the opportunity to study history in length and breadth as well as in depth, to develop expertise in various skills (general as well as historical) and to acquire and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the periods studied.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A-C grade including Maths and English

A grade B in GCSE subjects is required for most A level programmes. Please speak to the sixth form subject teacher for specific details on course entry.


AS and A2 is examined in two units with a coursework option.

Future opportunities

Students go on to study a wide variety of university courses as History teaches the skills of argument, evaluation and judgement. Students may follow careers in areas such as law, journalism, teaching and management.
