Btec Applied Science Level 3 Extended Certificate at Wetherby High School

Course description

This course is for learners who are interested in learning about the science sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education  courses, not necessarily in applied science.

The course consists of four units three which are mandatory one which is optional,

The course covers a range of areas within each scientific discipline both theoretically and practically

Course content

Unit 1 – principles of science - This unit covers  some of the key science concepts in biology, chemistry The topic areas covered in this unit include: animal and plant cells; tissues; atomic structure andbonding; chemical and physical properties of substances related to their uses; waves and their  application in communications.and physics.

Unit 2 practical science techniques- Learners will be introduced to quantitative laboratory techniques, calibration, chromatography, calorimetry and laboratory safety, which are relevant to the chemical and life science industries

Unit 3 scientific investigation techniques- Learners will cover the stages involved and the skills needed in planning a scientific investigation: how to record, interpret, draw scientific conclusions and evaluate.

Unit 4 is an optional unit to be chosen at a later date

Assessment

Unit 1 is an externally examined unit consisting of multiple choice, short and extended answer questions  in three sections biology chemistry and physics  the exam is 1hour 30 mins.

Units 2 and four are task based assignment units and are assessed internally by the subject assessors

Unit 3 is an externally assessed practical unit consisting of planning and carrying out an experiment under controlled conditions followed by a question paper based on the result and scientific method
