Applied Business Studies - As and A2 at Downend School

Course description

Applied Business encourages students to become independent learners. The course involves a range of teaching and learning styles, for example; Teacher Input, Visits to Organisations, Individual Research, Working Independently, Working in Small Groups and as Part of a Team. Assessment methods include written reports, presentations, role play and practical activities.

Develop skills, knowledge and understanding in business. Follow a programme of study that enables progression to both higher education and employment within business. Develop key skills that are highly valued by employers and universities. Gain confidence through developing independent learning skills.


AS Business Studies is made up of 3 compulsory units as follows:

Investigating People at Work - Human resources management

Business at Work - setting up a smallBusiness

Investigating Marketing - Developing a new product for an established business


A2 is again made up of 3 compulsory units as follows:

Business Development - presenting a business plan for a start-up Business

Impact of Finance on Business Decisions - The financial implications of strategic decision making

Planning an Event - planning and running a charitable event

Entry requirements

AS: Grade C in GCSE English and Maths

A2: Grade D in AS Business
