Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma in Sport at Wakefield College

Course description

There are countless career opportunities for people with knowledge and qualifications in sport development, coaching or fitness, and there is a huge demand for qualified people in all areas of sport as the UK builds on the legacy of various sporting events such as the 2012 Olympics, the Rugby League and Rugby Union world cups and the commonwealth gold for England netball. You could be one of them!

The Sports course will help if you want to acquire the skills to start working straight away, helping develop sport at grass roots level up to excellence level. Or maybe you want to study further, advance to Higher Education and become an expert working with elite performers as the UK tries to raise the bar after the Olympics and compete at international level in all sports.

Whatever your aspirations in the field of sports, this course will give you a good start on your chosen pathway.

Course content

What you will study

The Diploma consists of 12 units and the Extended Diploma of 18 units. Example modules include: anatomy and physiology, practical team sports, leadership, sports massage and therapy, sports injuries, training and fitness, nutrition and weight management, principles of coaching, sports psychology and health and safety.


How you will learn

Through a variety of teaching, learning and assessment styles, including written assessments, presentations and practicals.


Your Course Structure

This course is 60% theory and 40% practical. However many of the classroom sessions also have practical elements to them.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at A*-C (new grade 9-4) including English and Maths


4 GCSEs at A*-C (new grade 9-4)
Level 2 Functional Skills in either English or Maths, and
Grade D (new grade 3) or Level 1 Functional Skills in the other


Continuous assessment and assignment work. 

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

Future opportunities

Further study

Foundation Degree in Sports Performance Coaching, or in Health Related Exercise and Fitness, both at Wakefield College, and subsequent top-up BSc at the College.
Other degree courses at HE institutions. 

Many students from Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness go on to study Sports Therapy, Physical Education, Sports Development, Nutrition and Sports Coaching, but the range of options at Higher Education level is vast.


Career opportunities

Employment in the Sport and Recreation industry including: coaching/teaching/training, professional sport and performance, health promotion, community development officer and sports development officer, to name but a few.
