Physics A Level at Sydenham School - Sydenham and Forest Hill Sixth Form
Physics is about how everything around you works. Physics will give you the edge in the employment world, allowing you to stand out from the crowd. People are always impressed by a qualification in physics.
In Year 12 the topics studied are:
- Development of Practical Skills
- Foundations of Physics
- Forces and Motion
- Electrons, Waves and Photons
At A Level topics studied include those from Year 12, as well as:
- Newtonian World and Astrophysics
- Particles and Medical Physics
Grades BB in GCSE science or GCSE grade B in Physics and one other science. Plus grade 7 in GCSE Maths. Students must also take A Level Maths
Minimum point score of 38 including Maths and English at grade 4 at GCSE. This is equivalent to 4B and 4C grades overall at GCSE. Students will also need to achieve the subject specific criteria below:
NEW GCSE POINT SCORE GCSE grade 2017 Points:
- G 1.00
- F 1.50
- E 2.00
- D 3.00
- C 4.00
- B 5.50
- A 7.00
- A* 8.50
Students will sit terminal exams consisting of 3 papers at the end of 2 years.
Paper 1 & 2 will last 2hr 15mins and have a weighting of 37% each towards the final mark.
Paper 3 will last 1hr 30mins and has a weighting of 26%.
The course has a non-exam assessed practical skills component which is reported separately from the final grade as a Practical Endorsement.
