English at Kettering Buccleuch Academy
Most students at Montagu School follow the AQA GCSE English course. This covers a range of speaking and listening, reading and writing tasks. Although it is an English qualification, there is quite a lot of literature to study, including a play by Shakespeare. Students also read a wide range of non-fiction and analyse aspects of media. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of speaking and listening activities - e.g. individual extended contributions, group interaction and drama-focused activities. Writing assignments take many forms and some coursework is word-processed. The Internet and Encarta are used for research, together with more traditional documentary evidence. Aspects of spelling, punctuation and grammar are taught, to build upon the skills acquired at Key Stage 3.
Assessment is by written and oral coursework and by two written examination papers: · Speaking and Listening Coursework 20% · Written Coursework 20% Shakespeare Prose Study Media Original writing · Examination 60% Unseen fiction and media Poetry from different cultures Writing which argues, persuades, advises, informs, explains and describes.
