Children's Care, Learning & Development BTEC Diploma Level 2 at PETROC

Course description

If you're someone who loves the idea of working with children, this course is designed to help you gain essential knowledge and practical training to work with children in a wide variety of settings. You'll study a combination of theory and practical skills and the whole course is supported by placements to give you a real idea of what it's like to work in both nurseries and schools.

Theory sessions take place in a variety of classrooms, most of which are equipped with the latest white board technology. Work placement and an on site training room are used to develop professional practise knowledge and skills, and to build professional working relationships within settings.

Course content

The core units you will cover are Understanding Children's Development, Keeping Children Safe, Communication with Children and Adults, Preparing and Maintaining Environments for Childcare, Professional Development, Roles & Responsibilities in Childcare.

Entry requirements

All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade D or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths at grade 3 or above and GCSE English Language at grade 3 or above.
Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE Maths will study towards GCSE Maths to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study Level 1 Functional Skills Maths and retake GCSE Maths in the following year.

Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE English Language will study towards GCSE English Language to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study the Level 1 Functional Skills English and retake GCSE in the following year. 

At the end of the year all learners are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of their Level 2 Study Programme and achieved a graded improvement in their Maths and English Language studies before being allowed to progress.

We also accept applicants who have successfully completed a relevant Level 1 qualification.

Assessment

All units are assessed through assignment based written coursework, English and Maths will be assessed using examinations. Please note that all placement hours must be completed to gain this qualification. In addition to this, the basic Paediatric First Aid course must also be passed.

Future opportunities

Many students go on to study Level 3 Childcare or Level 2/3 Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools. You can also choose to continue your training through employment, although some employers may require Level 3 qualifications.

Q. What will I get at the end of the course?
A. You will achieve a Level 2 qualification which is equivalent to four GCSEs and demonstrates your commitment to a career in Children's Care, Learning and Development.

Q. What should I expect?
A. You should expect to go into a work placement and be prepared to be 'part of the team'. You will be in a trusted position and as such we expect you to maintain a professional manner and build on your professional practise skills at all times.
