Sport (Performance & Excellence) - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at East Durham College

Course description

In year one, you will study for the 90 Credit Diploma. If they achieve a minimum of a merit grade in all units, they may progress to the Extended Diploma in year two. A BTEC Level 3 is a practical, work related course. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the employment area you have chosen (a work placement of 36-hours is a required part of the programme) you will develop the skills required to start a career in the health & fitness industry. Completion of the Extended Diploma is the equivalent of three A Levels.

Course content

Topics: 

The course is comprised of practical and academic elements. Subjects such as sports coaching, sports nutrition, sports psychology, anatomy and physiology, sports injuries, practical team sports, fitness testing and fitness training will be delivered.

 
 

Entry requirements

There are two main requirements for this programme:

(1) Academic: Applicants require five GSCEs at A* to C grades, plus Maths and English at a minimum of grade C. Exceptions may apply if a grade D at Maths or English is gained.

(2) Sport: football & rugby students must apply to attend trials held by the EDC Coaching Staff to assess their ability level and suitability for the course.

Assessment

You will be assessed throughout the course in a number of different ways, these will be written assignments, presentations, production of videos and practical observations.

Financial information

If you have been a UK resident for the past 3 years and are under the age of 19 on the 31st August, you will not usually need to pay any course fees.

Future opportunities

Higher Education study such as BSc/BA at University or a Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching / Exercise and Fitness. Vocations within the sports industry e.g. coach, professional athlete, leisure attendant, gym instructor.
