History AS/A2 Level at Cardinal Newman Catholic School A Specialist Science College

Course description

Are you interested in how the world around you, and the society you live in, has developed over time? Do you like learning about people, how they interact and what motivates them? Interested in learning about different countries, societies and cultures? If you like the sound of this, then History may be your answer.

Don’t worry, a GCSE in History is not required. However, after a discussion with the Chief Examiner, it is advised that minimum grade of B in English will be required and where applicable, a B in History.

Course content

Unit 1 covers the the transformations of Britain, especially the wide impacts of Thatcher’s governments from 1979 to 1997. The exam consists of 2 essay style questions and 1 question where you will interpret the sources of evidence on Thatcher’s Governments.

Unit 2 explores 1917 – 54 USA and its Boom, Bust and Recovery. The exam consists of 1 essay style question and 1 question where you will interpret sources of evidence.

 

Entry requirements

5 GCSE’s grades A – C, including Grade B in English (students with grade C must see Mr Tucker).

Assessment

AS:

Unit 1 (worth 30%)

2 hour 15 minutes written exam

Unit 2 (worth 20%)

1 hour 30 minutes written exam

 

A2:

Unit 3 (worth 30%) is examined by a 2 hour 15 minute exam

Unit 4 (worth 20%) is a coursework unit and is examined by a 4000 word essay
