Plumbing Studies Diploma Level 2 at PETROC

Course description

If you have completed the Level 1 Plumbing study programme, this Level 2 qualification is designed to build on the skills and knowledge that you have already gained. You will be encouraged to find work experience so that you can apply skills learnt at college to actual workplace situations. Level 2 units include, Electrical, Science, Cold and Hot water, Sanitation and Heating & Health & Safety.

Course content

The one-year programme includes a mixture of both theory and practical assessments to help you develop the skills and knowledge required to meet plumbing industry standards. In combination with work experience or employment, this gives you the opportunity to begin your plumbing career with a valuable Level 2 qualification.

In order to complete the qualification the following topics are all compulsory: 
• health and safety 
• electrical principles 
• scientific principles 
• plumbing processes 
• cold water systems 
• hot water systems 
• sanitation 
• central heating systems 
• drainage systems

Your study programme will include tutorial sessions and work experience. You will also study Maths and English if a GCSE at grade C or above has not previously been achieved in these subjects.

Entry requirements

All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade D or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths at grade 3 or above and GCSE English Language at grade 3 or above.
Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE Maths will study towards GCSE Maths to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study Level 1 Functional Skills Maths and retake GCSE Maths in the following year.

Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE English Language will study towards GCSE English Language to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study the Level 1 Functional Skills English and retake GCSE in the following year. 

At the end of the year all learners are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of their Level 2 Study Programme and achieved a graded improvement in their Maths and English Language studies before being allowed to progress.

Applicants who have successfully completed a Level 1 course in Plumbing are also accepted.

Assessment

You will undergo progressive assessment on the completion of the practical and theoretical elements at the end of each unit. At the end of each unit there is a multiple choice exam.

Financial information

Q. Is there any equipment needed to participate on this course?
A. Safety clothing including boots and work trousers need to be purchased by the student. Students are also required to provide their own stationery and textbooks, a full equipment list will be provided at interview.

Q. Are there any costs for this course?
A. Students are asked to pay a contribution towards materials and learning resources used in workshops and classrooms. There may also be trips throughout the year which may incur a cost. Financial support may be available, if you require further information contact the guidance centre on 01271 338125.

Future opportunities

If you successfully complete the Level 2 programme, you will have the opportunity to progress onto a Level 3 qualification within the architecture and construction field. If you are able to secure employment in the plumbing industry, an apprenticeship could be an option for you.

Further information

The workshops are airy and spacious with individual bays and work bench training areas, all designed to the City & Guilds qualification standards. The workshops are well equipped with well-maintained tools and equipment relevant to the plumbing Industry and qualification.
