Media Studies A Level at Harris Academy South Norwood
In Year 12 students will investigate media in order to reach an understanding and basic evaluation of how meanings and representations are created. The key concepts of media language and conventions, institutions, audiences and representations will be explored through theoretical and practical work in audio-visual, print based and ICT based media.UNIT G321: INVESTIGATING MEDIA
Students will study the contemporary media landscape through analysis of a variety of media products, platforms and technologies. This Unit is assessed by a 1 hour 30 minutes written exam.UNIT G322: CREATING MEDIA
This is a coursework unit. Students will produce an opening of a new film including the title sequence together with a digital planning portfolio which is created on a blog platform.
At A2, students are encouraged to examine the media in a less formulaic way and demonstrate, develop and formulate their understanding of the media and its influential role in today's society as well as debating Major Contemporary Media Issues.UNIT G324: CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES
This paper covers the two areas of Theoretical Evaluation of Production alongside a study of Contemporary Media Issues. In Section A, candidates describe and evaluate their skills development in their production work and then select one production to evaluate in relation to a media concept. In Section B, candidates choose one topic and then demonstrate their understanding of a contemporary issue through a range of texts, institutions, audiences and debates. This Unit is externally examined with a 2 hour exam.UNIT G325: RESEARCH AND PRODUCTION
This is a coursework unit. Students will produce two linked production pieces using two different media platforms together with a digital planning portfolio which is created on a blog platform. They then analyse and evaluate their practical work over the two years with a written exam.
