Hospitality - Culinary Skills Diploma Level 2 at North Kent College

Course description

The Level 2 Diploma in Culinary Skills is suited to learners wanting to extend their knowledge and practical experience within professional cookery, service skills and knowledge can contribute towards a higher level of catering within the Hospitality Industry. The course is aimed at 16-19 year olds who have just completed studies at school within a culinary environment or students successfully completing the Level 1 Certificate in Culinary Skills who want to progress onto the next level.

Course content

Culinary skills qualifications are for anyone who works or wants to work as a chef in the catering and hospitality sector. You will also study functional skills in numeracy and literacy and get a chance to re-sit your GSCE’s in literacy and numeracy if your grades are a D.  You will attend tutorials, and have invaluable work experience in our Production Kitchen. The course consists of a total of 46 credits, 36 credits from the mandatory units and a minimum of 10 credits from the optional units. The unit can be selected from any of the optional units below:

Entry requirements

Applicants are interviewed and selected based on receiving a satisfactory school report or reference from their place of education.  For direct entry you will require GCSEs at D grade or higher in English and maths.  The Culinary Skills qualifications allow learners to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the catering and hospitality sector.


 This programme will use a variety of assessment methods which will include periodic skills tests, short answer questions, and assignment work. Your assignments are graded pass, merit and distinction, short answer test papers and your practical tests are graded pass/fail.  You will be able to track your performance as you work towards the qualification. There will also be classroom activity, online learning, visits and assignments to supplement learning. 

Financial information

As you will be working in a professional kitchen and restaurant environment, you will be required to wear appropriate uniform and use specialist knives and tools. The College has negotiated a competitive price for a uniform and equipment package. This is available directly from the supplier and the current cost is approximately: £150.

Materials fee approximately £60 payable at enrolment.

Future opportunities

After successful completion of the course, and achieving an overall credit, learners can progress into employment or onto the following qualifications:

Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Professional Cookery (7100) (Kitchen and Larder/Patisserie)

Level 3 Diploma in Hospitality Supervision and Leadership (7250)
