Music at Ringwood School Academy

Course description

Students will develop performance skills (solo and/or ensemble), compose music and learn about harmony.

They will build up their aural and analytical skills by studying a range of set works.

Course content

  • A Level music consists of performing, composing, listening and understanding.
  • Students can perform either as a soloist or as a member of an ensemble in any style.
  • They will compose a number of pieces and  listen and analyse a wide variety of music.

Entry requirements

3 Bs and 3 Cs (or equivalent) at GCSE. In addition, a clear aptitude for music.

Assessment

AS:

  • Performing (6 minutes) - 30%
  • Composition x2 - 30%
  • Listening & Analysis - 40%

A2:

  • Performing (8 minutes) - 30%
  • Composition x2 - 30%
  • Music in Context - 40%

Financial information

Students will be required to continue regular lessons on their instrument (including voice).

Future opportunities

Music may be studied in preparation for Higher Education or for enjoyment as part of a balanced programme of study.

Music prepares students for careers in recording, radio and television, composing and arranging, retailing, production, teaching and theatre/concert work.

In the modern world, musicians need ever increasing interchangeable skills. A Level Music is an ideal qualification to meet the needs of the 21st Century.
