Performing Arts (Acting) Level 3 Extended Diploma at New College Durham

Course description

This lively course will develop your performance skills and provide you with the basis for a wide range of careers in the performing arts industry. It is for those who wish to start or further develop their career in performing arts. You will get hands on experience throughout the course including live drama performances at the Gala Theatre in Durham and workshops. 

Course content

The course consists of six compulsory core units:   

  •  The Historical Context of Performance
  •  Performance Workshop
  •  Performing Arts Business
  •  Rehearsing (2 units)
  •  Performing

 and twelve specialist units chosen from the following:   

  •  Principles of Acting
  •  Applying Acting Styles
  •  Musical Theatre Performance
  •  Singing
  •  Vocal Skills
  •  Movement Skills
  •  Theatre-in-Education
  •  Devising Theatre
  •  Physical Theatre
  •  Theatre for Children
  •  Contemporary Theatre Performance

You will have the opportunity to add a range of additional qualifications including LCM grades in Music Theatre.


Entry requirements

A minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above, ideally including English and Maths but not essential (or an equivalent related qualification), if you have GCSE Drama we would expect a grade C or above; or First Diploma in Performing Arts (with appropriate level of attainment). Successful completion of course induction. All applicants will attend an interview/audition. Exceptional entry is available to applicants of all ages with suitable experience and ability.


Assessment is carried out on a continuous basis and the course is delivered through a series of practical projects and assignments, including public performances.

Progression opportunities

Successful completion of the Diploma can lead to higher education at university or drama/music school.   Past students on the course have attended the following drama schools:  RSAMD, The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Central School of Speech and Drama, The Theatre School of Manchester Metropolitan University, Bretton Hall College, E15 Acting School, Dartington College of Arts, Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, The Webber Douglas Academy, Italia Conti Theatre School, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art; Mountview Theatre School; others have progressed onto BA and FdA courses at universities throughout the country.   Examples of professional success include, former National Diploma student, Tim Funnell, in The Royal National Theatre production of 'An Inspector Calls', 'Tonight’s the Night' and 'Billy Elliot' in London’s West End; Stephen Lamb and Mark Calvert, are members of Northern Stage Theatre Company at Newcastle Playhouse; Ellie Quine who appeared in “Cooking with Elvis” in London’s West End, Hannah Barrie who was a member of the RSC  and Brian Lonsdale who is appearing in The Pitman Painters in the West End.
