Engineering Level 2 BTEC First Diploma at Eastleigh College

Course description

The programme is recommended for those that wish to develop a career in maintenance and manufacturing engineering. The programme is also designed to supplement the Level 3 for those students whose Maths grade is only achieved at GCSE Foundation level.

 

Course content

The programme provides students with the basic building blocks of engineering, acting as an introduction to other engineering programmes.

Over the year, students will complete units in

  • Health and Safety
  • Computer Aided Engineering
  • Machining Techniques
  • Fabrication Techniques
  • Engineering Materials
  • Work Skills
  • Functional Skills.

The programme is approximately an 80/20 split of theory and practical work.

You will learn through a mixture of theory and practical sessions.

Visits and trips may be used to allow students to visualise certain elements of the programme.

Entry requirements

  • You will require a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade A*-D including English and Maths or possess an equivalent relevant qualification.
  • All students should have good attendance and attainment reports from a previous school or college, and demonstrate enthusiasm and motivation at interview.
  • No previous experience of engineering is required.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a number of written assignments and in certain units, practical assessments and two external exams (one written, one online).

Financial information

You will need to provide yourself with pens, pencils paper and a lever-arch folder for your notes.

You will also need to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for practical lessons. This includes appropriate safety footwear and overalls or dustcoat.

Eastleigh College will provide access to all other PPE as appropriate for the qualification and units selected.

Future opportunities

The progression route for this programme is to Level 3 Engineering, an Apprenticeship or employment in the industry.

A career in Engineering could take you to a vast range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, food and drink, marine, medical, IT, construction, nuclear, or even space.

There are opportunities to work as a mechanical, electrical or chemical engineer in most industries, where you could focus on the research and design elements or take a more hands-on approach with manufacturing and maintenance.
