A-Levels - A Level Physical Education at Wakefield College
To study this course you need to be actively participating in sport at a high level, preferably as a member of a team, as there is a 30% practical assessment in the role of player/performer or coach.
The course will give you knowledge, understanding and skills relating to the scientific and practical aspects of physical education and it will explore the socio-cultural aspects of a range of sporting activities. You will need to have a high level of interest and ability in Science and the course further develops aspects of Science, Psychology and Sociology in a sporting context.
You will also learn to evaluate performance and suggest plans for improvement and will cover the benefits of healthy living alongside topics such as the role of media in sport.
What you will study
In addition to the practical element, you will study the following topics:
Subject content 1. Applied anatomy and physiology 2. Skill acquisition 3. Sport and society 4. Exercise physiology 5. Biomechanical movement 6. Sport psychology 7. Sport and society and the role of technology in physical activity and sport
Your Course Structure
There will be a mixture of theory lessons, homework tasks and practical activities to prepare you for the exams and the 30% assessment of your practical skills.
The full A level is a two year course with all the assessments at the end of the second year. However, there is a one year Advanced Subsidiary qualification available and you will be sitting these exams at the end of the first year to gain an independent evaluation of your level of performance.
For AS at the end of the first year: Written exam: 2 hours 84 marks 70% of AS PLUS Internal assessment, external moderation 90 marks 30% of AS For the full A level at the end of two years: Two written papers each worth 35% and a practical assessment worth 30%. Paper 1 Written exam: 2 hours 105 marks 35% of A-level Paper 2 Written exam: 2 hours 105 marks 35% of A-level Internal assessment, external moderation 90 marks 30% of A-level
Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residential etc. which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.
