Mathematics A Level at Salisbury 6th Form College
If Maths gives you a buzz at GCSE then taking it further could be for you. Maths is a subject that brings many others together and is the tool used in a wide range of areas. Maths supports work undertaken in Sciences, including Psychology, as well as Business, Geography and many others. It is a subject held in high regard by higher education institutions and employers.
A Level Mathematics covers the basics of algebra, trigonometry and calculus, building on the work undertaken by you in GCSE Mathematics. The course looks at real world applications of Mathematical optimisation problem solving, including those found in the world of business, manufacturing and the social sciences. The course also looks at probability modelling, correlation and regression, vectors, mechanics and integration techniques.
There are many reasons why people choose to study A Level Mathematics. It might be a requirement for what you want to study at university.
People with A Level Mathematics tend to earn more on average than people without it. Though this itself may or may not be a good enough reason to study maths, the skills it allows you to develop include problem solving, logic and analysing situations. Add in the improvements to your basic numeracy skills and that bit of creativity needed to solve maths problems and you’ve got yourself a set of skills which would make you more desirable for almost any job!
Maths at S6C generally has small classes that allow students to develop their skills independently while still having rapid access to support.
Two core modules covering key skills take place in each year. A third module is then studied in each year and these cover Statistics, Mechanics (mathematical physics) and Decision (IT related mathematical skills)
To study this course you will need grade 6 or above in GCSE Mathematics.
A Level Mathematics can help you progress onto a range of higher education courses including Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. It also opens up career routes into the Financial Service, Banking and Accountancy, to name but a few.
Employers value A Level mathematics both for the specific skills learnt and the ability to look at a problem, create a logical solution and take it through to completion.
What our students think
“I knew that Maths would be beneficial to me for studying Chemistry and Biology but I have really enjoyed studying it, more than I thought I would. The class sizes at S6C are small enough so that you get the help you need but it also means that I have had the opportunity to get to know those in my class and it makes all the difference when it comes to revising for exams because everybody works together. The teaching is really fantastic too and it makes Maths really fun to learn, even when it’s difficult!”
