Film Studies - A Level at Bishop Milner Catholic College
AS and A Level Film Studies builds on students informal learning, prior experience of film in key stages 1 to 3 and the knowledge, understanding and skills established at Key Stage 4, in whatever curricular context.The AS/A2 specification in Film Studies is designed to deepen students’ understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film.
What will I study during the AS course & how will it be assessed?
Unit 1: Exploring Film Form
This unit focuses on the micro features of film and is internally assessed through the completion of two pieces of coursework. The first task is a written analysis of a chosen extract that explores how filmmaking methods construct meaning. Students then go on to develop a creative project in the form of an extended step outline or a digital storyboard.
Unit 2: British and American Film
With close focus on narrative and genre, this unit focuses on British and American film and is externally assessed through one examination that consists of the following sections:
• Producers and Audiences and the relationship between text and spectator• Topics in British Film
• Comparative Study of two US Films.What will I study during the A2 course & how will it be assessed?
Unit 3: Film Research and Creative Projects
This coursework unit is internally assessed through the completion of one small scale – research project on an area of film interest and an advanced creative project.
Unit 4: Varieties of Film Experience: Issues and Debates
Designed to explore a variety of film issues and debates, this unit is externally assessed through one examination that consists of the following sections:
• World Cinema Topics
• Spectatorship Topics
• Single Film – Critical Study
