History A Level at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College*
The course will interest to those who enjoy studying the past and have a desire to understand how historical events have had a real impact on our modern world. The course is designed to enable you to explore and extend your interest and enthusiasm for History and to acquire an understanding of its intrinsic value and significance. It will help you improve as an independent learner and as a critical and reflective individual with an analytical and enquiring mind.
The world in which we live today has been shaped by the world that is now behind us. A study of History at A Level will not only teach you about significant periods in time, such as the English Reformation and the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany, but also develop your skills of enquiry and analysis.
Year 1: The Tudors 1485–1547; Germany: Democracy to Nazism 1918–1933.
Year 2: The Tudors 1547–1603; Germany: Democracy to Nazism 1933–1945.
There is also a personal study element to the course where you can research and write about your own chosen time period of history.
At least 5 full GCSEs grades 9–4 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths, plus a grade B/6 in English Language. GCSE History is essential at grade 4 (grade C). If you like discussions, analysing situations or problems, researching or communicating ideas, then this course will suit you. An ability to express yourself helps, as well as a liking for the printed word. The exams are essay based so the ability to write for an extensively is required.
The course is assessed through examination and coursework.
Not only can you continue to study History at degree level, this qualification will also prepare you for university courses in Politics, Law, Media, Philosophy and Economics and any career requiring critical thinking.
