Drama and Theatre Studies A Level at Newcastle Sixth Form College

Course description

This subject is suitable for you if you have an avid interest in theatre and drama. You will develop your understanding and knowledge of politics, ideas, the past, the future, culture, people, power and society. You will have the opportunity to explore practically, the theoretical elements of drama, theatre and theatrical convention, exploring genre, form and structure.

Entry requirements

As well as the minimum GCSE entry criteria, you will need GCSE English at grade C and GCSE Drama at grade C or BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Performing Arts (Acting) at Merit, if studied. You will also be required to pass a drama audition and interview to discuss theatre productions you have seen, before you can be accepted to study this subject.

Assessment

Learning and assessment methods

You will learn through the practical and theoretical exploration of texts, lecture work, group work with self and peer assessment. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Theatre on a regular basis as preparation for one of the written elements in your studies. You will be assessed through coursework and a practical and written examination based on the core content:


• Demonstrate a practical understanding of two complete texts and three extracts form three different texts.
• Study the work and methodologies of two theatre practitioners.
• Participate in two performances, a piece of devised work and a text already studied.

Future opportunities

You could progress to a Foundation or Honours Degree. You might also like to consider a career in the theatre industry or join the teaching profession with this subject. The communication and inter-personal skills acquired through drama are becoming increasingly sought after by employers. The skills you will build working with others are transferable to any work or study context.
