Fashion and Textiles A Level at QE Academy Trust

Course description

This is an extremely creative course that offers students the opportunity to explore and develop their artistic skills by experimenting with fabric, threads, colour and embellishment to creative individual pieces and projects.

Course content

During the AS course students will complete two units.  The first being a portfolio unit where students will be taught a  wide range of techniques that can be used to create a piece of ‘Textile Art’ that is inspired by the sea.  Students will research into work of artists, fashion designers and crafts men to gain inspiration and knowledge. The second unit is set by the examination board.  Students choose a question and work to a specific theme.  Example topics have included; History of fashion, Architecture and Pop Art.

The two units at AS form 50% of the corresponding four‐unit A Level.

Students are again expected to complete two units over the A2 course.  The first unit is a personal choice where students are able to study and explore a specific interest.  Example of projects have included; ‘How Music Influenced Fashion in the 60’s’ and ‘How Textiles are used to Represent Women of Power in Film and Television’.  A relating dissertation of is also required.

The second unit is a controlled assignment which is set by the examination board and accumulates in a controlled assessment.

Entry requirements

You do not need to have studied GCSE Textiles, although it would be useful to have an appreciation of Fashion and Textiles and have a genuine interest and commitment to the subject. It is recommended that candidates have gained sound communication and literacy skills at a level equivalent to GCSE Grade C in English.
