Art & Design AS/A2 Level at Alexandra Park School
Students will explore a range of two and three-dimensional approaches to their studies, giving visual form to individual thoughts, feelings, observations and ideas. They will develop:
- Knowledge and understanding of art and design in contemporary society and in other times and cultures.
- An understanding of the interrelationships between art and design and an awareness of the contexts in which they operate.
- Investigative, analytical, experimental, technical and expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement.
- Intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers.
The AS is a one year course consisting of one module & externally set assignment
The full A Level is gained by completing a third module and externally set assignment
The essential requirement for Art and Design is a Grade C, preferably B, at GCSE. However, if you have an aptitude for the subject, you may have the basic skills to succeed and we would be happy to see a portfolio of your work. Students who have achieved a BTEC in Art & Design should continue on to the AS course in Photography.
AS - Component 1 Weighting 50% of the total qualification & Component 2 Weighting 50% of the total qualification - Externally set assignment 10 hrs
A2 - Component 1 Weighting 40% of the total qualification & Component 2 Weighting 60% of the total qualification - Externally set assignment 15 hrs
There are many careers in art and design, graphic design, product design, fashion, textiles, interior design and theatre design, to name a few. Most require further study at art school, further education college or university. Students wishing to take art after A level, generally go on to do a one year ‘Foundation Course’ before applying to degree courses in more specialised areas.
