Further Mathematics at Ormiston Park Academy
This course is designed to stretch and challenge you, to push you past your goals and create new ones in the study of maths. The qualification has been created for the most able mathematicians and those that are interested in studying a maths based degree at university. Many of the top flight universities and employers highly regard this qualification with success bringing you many opportunities for progression. You should select to study this course if you are really excited and engaged with maths, you want to extend your learning and continue to push your own boundaries of success.
Further maths students will build upon techniques in algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus. You will develop skills in topics such as complex numbers, matrices, proof, hyperbolic functions, polar coordinates and differential equations. Further maths falls into three strands: decision – networks, algorithms, sorting, linear programming, mathematical modelling; mechanics – forces, energy, motion, kinematics, projectiles, mathematical modelling, moments, collisions and stability; and statistics – probability, data handling, probability distributions, estimation, correlation and regression and hypothesis testing.
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above. Grade B or above in Maths and are studying A level mathematics as part of your study programme.
You will be taught in a theoretical and practical setting and assessed via written exam papers.
Your successes in this subject will provide a foundation for further studies in any science or maths based course, ranging from computer science, medical sciences and psychology to statistics, management and actuarial science.
Opportunities lie to support the Maths department in the Academy working with students in Years 7-11. OPA would like to support students by supporting projects within the Academy such as the OPA Café, our administration team, and our business ventures for students.
