History at Dereham Sixth Form College

Course description

"To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child", Marcus Tullius Cicero. Though over 2000 years old, this quote perfectly illustrates what History can do for you; open your eyes to our world and our past. History
is a subject that makes look at ourselves and really ponder how we and our society have developed.
History is an incredibly versatile qualification that can lead onto a huge variety of professions. You gain valuable skills of analysis, essay writing as well as
a trained, critical eye, all of which make you highly attractive to employers. Universities find History a very attractive subject; the Russell Group highlight
the subjects versatility as a ‘facilitating’ subject, with students going onto study a wide range of subjects at university. History graduates can be found in many
different professions; the heritage sector, education, the legal profession and journalism to name a small number.
History is one of the most popular A-level courses at DSFC and has achieved consistently high results. Our staff are committed to pushing the boundaries,
supporting our students, constantly exploring the subject and looking for ways to push our pupils to achieve their best. We follow the OCR A specification, course that provides a solid overview of how the modern world came to be.

In the first year you will study two key areas. You will study how Germany changed between 1933-63 as well as examining Britain between 1900-51 and learning how
modern Britain was moulded during the first half of the 20th century.
In the second year you will focus on two areas. You will complete a coursework assignment examining the causes of the Second World War as well as examining
the development of Civil Rights in the USA between 1865-1992 for African americans, women, trade unions and Native Americans.
