Health and Social Care BTEC Level 3 Diploma/ Extended Diploma at Thomas Tallis School

Course description

The course aims to introduce students to a wide variety of experiences in the health, social care and early years sectors. The qualification is equivalent to 2 or 3 A Levels ( depending on whether it is the Diploma or Extended Diploma) and will build and develop the necessary practical skills and understanding to provide learners with a firm grounding in the principles of health and social care, enabling progression into employment or higher level education.

The programme is delivered through theoretical, practical and vocational elements. Work experience and links to the workplace form a central part of the programme, which includes 100 hours minimum work experience.

Areas of study include: Human Development, Anatomy, Sociological Perspectives, Principals of Safe Practice, Working in HSC, Work Experience, Research Enquiries in HSC, Meeting Individual Care Needs, Promoting Public Health, Psychological Perspectives, Supporting Individuals with Additional Needs, Caring for Individuals with Dementia and Nutritional Health.

Entry requirements

5 A*-C grades at GCSE including English and Science, or Distinction/Merit in BTEC Level II Health & Social Care Diploma.


There are a total of 8 (Dip) or 13 (Ext Dip) units over the 2 years.

Depending on the course you take, there are either 3 or 4 externally assessed exams.

All students sit: 'Human Lifespan and Development', 'Working in Health and Social Care', 'Enquiries into Current Research in HSC.'

Students on the Extended Dip also sit an exam in 'Anatomy and Physiology.'
