Media Studies A Level at Greenford High School

Course description

This course is designed to engage students with the ever-changing media landscape and how we use the media to communicate ideas about our world.

Course content

Media Studies is a very popular option at AS/A level and attracts well-motivated students who are interested in the mass media - film, television, radio, the press and the internet/digital communications. The course aims to develop media literacy and students' capacity to communicate this understanding via media technology and in the written form. There is an introductory module outlining the key concepts of Media Studies across the three media platforms of Broadcasting, Print & E-media and learning media text analysis. The main exam topic is an in-depth investigation into a media industry using case studies on a cross-media platform basis. The investigations feed into students' practical productions, which are a substantial undertaking. At A2 students develop their understanding of media institutions, audiences, representations and media practices and undertake a written investigation into an area of the media of their choice, which is supported by a linked practical production.

Entry requirements

Five GCSE grades A*-C including English Language & English Literature. Grade B in Media Studies;a grade B in English Language is required if Media Studies not taken at GCSE.

Assessment

Y12: Students sit a two hour paper, Investigating Media, which counts for 50% of the AS marks.  Coursework encompasses two productions (moving image and print) forCreating Media - plus a 1,500 word essay, which accounts for the other 50%.

Y13: There is two hour examination which is worth 50% of the marks for the year. The coursework unit, a 2,000 word research essay and a linked production (eg: a five minute film, music video or five pages from a magazine) accounts for the other 50% of the marks.

Future opportunities

Knowledge of the media is increasingly valued and is becoming an important aspect of work in most institutions in our information-led society, particularly with respect to following developments in technology such as the internet and user generated content.  This course will also help develop research and communication skills and is essential for any university course. Media Studies naturally leads to careers in journalism, marketing, advertising or public relations. However, an awareness of how the world of media works will undoubtedly support other careers, such as social work, law, medicine and education. By knowing how the media operates in our society, future generations will be able to decode messages more skilfully and engage with topics that are compelling aspects of tomorrow’s world.
