Product Design at The Bramcote College

Course description

As part of the course you will face some serious design challenges. You will expand on your existing knowledge of the design process and you will be involved in some interesting design challenges like: Can you design a better disposable razor? Your design skills will be developed and you will be taught how to make prototype models from various resistant materials such as, paper, card, Styrofoam, polymorph (smart material) and other high quality products within your chosen specialist area.

You will also be shown how to use 2 and 3 Dimensional drawing packages using CAD (Computer aided drawing). These will be used when constructing and prototyping your design proposals. You will then be able to output your design drawings using CAM (Computer aided manufacture) to a CO2 laser machine which will cut out your prototype using various materials such as wood, plastic, card, denim, etc.
Assessment:
AS Advanced Innovation Challenge requires candidates to work with various resistant materials to design, model, analyse and make a practical prototype from a stipulated design brief. This is a 6 hour design and make challenge under examination conditions. This work is moderated externally by OCR. The Product Study is a coursework unit. This involves designing, researching, experimenting and trailing your designed product. Evidence through digital pictures is collected using Microsoft ‘PowerPoint’. This is internally marked and externally moderated by OCR.

A2 Design, Make and Evaluate is a coursework unit. This is produced using Microsoft ‘PowerPoint’. This is internally marked and externally moderated by OCR. Product Design is an externally marked written examination paper. The subject material covered in the examination is: Materials, components and their uses, manufacturing processes, industrial and commercial practices.
