Sociology AS/A2 Level at The Basildon Academies Sixth Form

Course description

An AQA AS in Sociology is designed to encourage candidates to demonstrate
the application of a range of skills and consider the integration of
sociological themes.

The Sociology A Level course helps students develop a number of new skills:
• How to use evidence to support your arguments
• How to investigate facts and use deduction
• How to put over your point of view fluently
• How to work as a team to achieve results

Course content

AS outline- At this level, candidates will acquire knowledge of contemporary
social processes and social changes. Candidates will be encouraged to develop
their own social awareness through active engagement with the contemporary
social world.

• Unit 1: Choose one from three:
• Culture and Identity
• Families and Households
• Wealth, Poverty and Welfare

• Unit 2: Choose one from two:
• Education with Research Methods
• Health with Research Methods.


A Level: At this level, candidates will continue to focus on contemporary society but they should demonstrate a wider range and greater depth of knowledge and understanding and more highly developed skills of application, analysis,
interpretation and evaluation.

Unit 3: Choose one topic from four:
• Beliefs in Society;
• Global development;
• Mass Media;
• Power and Politics

Unit 4: Choose one topic from two:
• Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods;
• Stratification and Differentiation with Theory and Methods

Entry requirements

General Sixth Form

Assessment

  Unit 1- 40% of AS, 1 hour exam, worth 60 marks (20% of A level)

• Unit 2: 60% of AS, 2 hour exam, worth 90 marks (30% of A level)
• Unit 3: 20% of A level, 1 hour 30 min exam, worth 60 marks
• Unit 4: 30% of A level, 2 hours, worth 90 marks

Future opportunities

 

Sociology is a good choice of subject for people who want a career in social work, nursing or medicine. But the subject is also useful in a number of other careers, like marketing, PR, journalism, law or teaching.
