Product Design A Level at Upton Court Grammar School
Product Design is a course at A Level which can be followed by students who have an interest in Product Design, Resistant Materials or Graphic Products. It is a wide ranging course which covers material from both of these subjects, though it is weighted more towards Resistant Materials. The course follows a ‘research, design, develop and make’ project pattern and also requires a thorough knowledge of the theoretical aspects of the subject such as industrial manufacturing and material properties.
At AS the course requires thorough knowledge of materials and processes of manufacture, both within school and in industry. Product analysis is the basis for most of the knowledge application, but also sustainability and environmental issues make up another large area of knowledge. Alongside this and o ther areas of theory including s mart materials, the course work project will be completed. At A2 the pattern is very similar, but the choice of project should be more demanding and show higher standards of design and manufacture. The theoretical know ledge expected will include design history, modern materials, industrial testing and rapid prototyping, ICT within manufacturing and technological advances in product design. Each year students attend the study lectures by practising d esigners in London. It’s extremely interesting to hear how designers practice, build up a business and aim their products towards users.
You will be assessed in two parts: the course work is 50% of the AS and the 2 hour exam constitutes the other 50%. This is exactly the same at A2. At the end of the whole A Level, AS results from both course work and the exam will count for 50% of the whole A’ Level as will A2 results.
