Science Package GCSE at Barnet and Southgate College

Course description

This is a one year full-time revision course designed for students who wish to retake their GCSEs in the 3 science subjects plus Maths and English. There is the option to study GCSE Psychology.

Course content

All students take three units covering such topics as cells, genetic variation, homeostasis, drugs and their impact, energy and biomass and how science works.

Entry requirements

You will be expected to have at least a grade D in core science and grade D in Additional Science. We will consider BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Science, subject to your performance in the pre-enrolment test. You will also be expected to demonstrate through assessment, a standard of literacy and numeracy suitable for a level 2 qualification. You must have a genuine interest in and an aptitude for science.

Assessment

All units will be assessed by one hour written exams consisting of short structured questions and at least one longer response question. Each paper accounts for 25% of the overall marks and your work will be assessed for the quality of your written communication skills. You will also have to complete Investigative Skills Assignments which are used to assess biology practical work and scientific data handling. This accounts for the remaining 25% of the marks. Lessons will consists of lectures and lab based practical exercises as appropriate. Extensive use is made of current classroom technology and field trips. You will also attend tutorials and if required additional workshop support is provided.

Future opportunities

This course designed to provide career development opportunities, as well as a good preparation for progression onto AS/A level biology or vocational science courses at Level 3.
