German A Level at John Hampden Grammar School

Course description

Students will acquire the four key language skills (speaking, reading, writing & listening) via the broad topics of media, healthy lifestyle, popular culture, family relationships, environment, multicultural society and contemporary social issues.

In the second year, students will also study a selected cultural topic from a choice of regionalism, 20th century history, literature, film, music and art. Students will be using an AQA course which has full online support in the form of listening, reading and grammar exercises and videos. Students will also experience a wide variety of activities and learning styles drawing on authentic, lively materials from the internet, newspapers, films, magazines, radio, literary texts and cartoons.

The course offers a lively, entertaining and challenging approach for those who enjoy using languages and are interested in other cultures.

German is offered with many courses at university in both the arts and science as a valuable asset in any field. Recent students have gone on to study languages with engineering, business studies, journalism, law, media studies and travel & tourism

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements are as follows – all of these requirements must be met:

  • A minimum of 7 GCSE full course passes at a C grade or higher
  • A minimum GCSE total points score of 344 based on the best 8 full course separate subject GCSE passes
  • A minimum C grade in English Language and Mathematics
  • B in German GCSE (A*/A strongly advised)
