Applied Science Extended Diploma (Level 3) at Leeds City College

Course description

Develop your practical and theoretical knowledge further and prepare for university study or employment in the different areas of science.

You will develop scientific practical techniques and learn about working in the science industry. You will also build on study skills for science such as communication, analytical, evaluative and research skills.

Course content

This is a two year course, consisting of modules worth 5 or 10 credits.

180 credits are needed to achieve an Extended Diploma.

The Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A-Levels.

The course is a stepping stone to a career in Science or further study at University.

There are 7 mandatory units and the 6 other units are specialist units selected by tutors, so may vary.

Mandatory units are:

  • Principles and Applications of Science.
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques.
  • Scientific Investigation Skills
  • Laboratory techniques and their Applications.
  • Investigative Project.
  • Contemporary Issues in Science.

Entry requirements

You must have a good understanding of Level 2 Science, so it is necessary that you have GCSE Science at CC or Level 2 BTEC at Merit or above.

Additionally you need Maths and English GCSE Grade C or higher.


One unit per year is examined and one is externally assessed. The other units are assessed internally by coursework.

Future opportunities

A Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Medical Science) will gain you access to many University courses. In fact, 95% of Universities accept this qualification.

If you know what you would like to study in future, check the course requirements by looking at University websites or You can progress to degree courses in Medical Science, Pharmacy, Diagnostic Radiotherapy, Biochemistry and many more. Remember to check the GCSE requirements too, to make sure you meet these.

You may also choose to apply for a Foundation Degree, either at University or one of those offered by our HE department at Leeds City College.
