Course description

What will I learn?

The course offers opportunities to develop your use of language, encourage expansive reading and deepen your understanding of Welsh literature. Your ability to communicate confidently, correctly and fluently in oral and written Welsh will also be developed.

In year 12 you will complete three units of work of Advanced Supplementary standard.

UNIT 1 : CY1 – Film, Drama and Oral

a) Discussing the film ‘Branwen’ (Gareth Miles)

b) Discussing the drama ‘Siwan’ (Saunders Lewis)

When discussing the film and the drama you will study plot, construction, dialogue, theme, producing and the author’s attitude towards life.

UNIT 2 : CY2 – Written Coursework

You will be assessed on three tasks :

a) scripting

b) creative writing

c) an essay, speech or article presenting an opinion based on research.

UNIT 3 : CY3 – Use of Language and Poetry

Section A – Use of Language – a question including a variety of grammar exercises.

Section B – Poetry of the 20th and the 21st Century – an essay will be set on poetry.

In year 13 you will complete another 3 units.

UNIT 4 : CY4 – the Novel and Oral

You will be examined in groups of three on the following:

Discussing the novel ‘Dan Gadarn Goncrit’ (Mihangel Morgan)

and refering to other works.

UNIT 5 : CY5 – Fables, Hengerdd and Cywyddau

You will be expected to answer two questions, one on the fable of ‘Branwen ferch Llyr’ and ‘Culhwch ac Olwen’ and the second question on the poetry of

the Hengerdd or the Cywyddau.

UNIT 6 : CY6 – Use of Language and Appreciation ot Literature.

Section A – you will appreciate a piece of prose or poetry in essay form.

Section B – you will write a creative piece and translate a piece of prose from English to Welsh.

How will I learn?

You will be taught in the school. You will complete written assingments, write essays, complete language exercises and construct creative work. Oraly you will be given opportunities to discuss and express an opinion in groups and construct presentations e.g. power point and photostory.

Entry requirements

You should have a good GCSE in Welsh Language and Literature. The students who do well are usually those who have a real interest in the subject.

Assessment

CY1 – Oral exam – 1 hour per group discussing the film and the drama. 20%

CY2 – Written Coursework (3 tasks) 15%

CY3 – Written exam – 2 hours on language and poetry 15%

CY4 – Oral exam – 1 hour per group discussing the novel 15%

CY5 – A 1 1/2 hour exam on the fables, the hengerdd and the cywyddau. 15%

CY6 – Written exam – use of language and the appreciation of literature – 2 1/4 hours. 20%

The course prepares students for university to study Welsh and a wide variety of other courses.

Studying Welsh can lead to a variety of jobs. Our students in the past have had jobs in fields such as the law, theatre, teaching, media, translating, social work, administration, journalism and archaeology.
