Applied Information Technology A Level at Dereham Neatherd High School
With the use of ICT increasing in the workplace daily, advanced ICT skills are becoming more important than ever. This qualification provides a more vocational perspective where students develop all the necessary skills required in ICT. The course also offers students the chance to personalise their path of study and obtain a qualification that meets both their individual aptitudes and interests.
It gives students a wide choice of progression into further study, training or relevant employment. Students who successfully complete the qualification will be well equipped to move into degrees and BTEC Higher National Diploma in related subjects such as IT, Computer Science, Information Systems, Multimedia, Software Engineering, Computer Networking, e-Business and Information Management.
Applied ICT is a popular subject at Dereham Sixth Form and this is exemplified by the numbers of students that have opted to study it.
Unit 1 - Using ICT to Communicate Creation of a portfolio of different communications, including a presentation on different methods of communicating information and the technologies that support them; comparison of a collection of standard documents used by organisations
Unit 2 - How Organisations use ICT How organisations collect, disseminate and use information, how they manage the flow of information between sections or departments and the way they use ICT to access and exchange information. There is an external assessment for this unit.
Unit 3 - ICT Solutions for Individuals & Society A presentation of the results of an investigation, including the use of a spreadsheet to analyse numeric data, along with a report on the sources and methods used to find information.
Unit 9 - Working to a Brief This Project Management unit goes with Unit 14 below and looks at time management, planning, collaboration with others and the evaluation of creating a website for the later Unit 14.
Unit 12 – Publishing Students meet with a client to decide on a Publication then create, design the product, collect material and then produce the multi-paged document using Desk Top Publishing software.
Unit 14 – Developing and Creating Websites Students learn about setting up a website, understanding terminology and web programming languages then create an effective website. Students gain an understanding of laws and Assessment You will sit two exams containing a mixture of multiple choice, short answer and essay questions.
Minimum BCCCC including B in ICT GCSE or OCR National.
Coursework is externally assessed. Unit 2 is assessed with an exam containing a mix of shorter answer and essay questions.
