Computer Science A Level at Acton High School

Course description

In this course students will gain an understanding of the principles and concepts underpinning computers and communications. Students will work practically using problem solving and programming skills. This course is highly technical, and students will spend a good deal of their time learning how to program using the Java language, in an open source environment called BlueJ. Although no prior programming experience is needed, students with no experience in any programming language will face a steep learning curve.

Course content

AS Level

Paper 1, 50% of AS Level

Computer based tasks based on problem solving and programming skills (1 hr 30 minutes)

Paper 2, 50% of AS Level

Written exam on theory topics (1 hr 30 minutes)

A Level

Paper 1 , 40% of A Level

Computer based tasks based on problem solving and programming skills (2 hrs 30 minutes)

Paper 2, 40% of A Level

Written exam on problem solving; programming concepts and data structures; computing theory; operating systems; databases and networks. (2 hrs 30 minutes)

Non exam assessment, 20% of A Level

Individual coursework project. A project of your own choice with marks awarded on the quality of your technical solution.

Entry requirements

GCSE Mathematics or GCSE Computing at grade B or above

Future opportunities

This course will give students an excellent foundation for a Computer Science or related degree. Programming skills are relevant to scientific, engineering or technical work in many industries, including Consumer Electronics and the Games Industry.
