Hairdressing and Barbering VRQ Level 2 Diploma at Nelson and Colne College

Course description

On this 1 year course you will learn how to perform a variety of services, including colouring and lightening hair, cutting hair using a range of techniques, and styling and dressing hair. You will also learn to develop your communication and customer service skills whilst working with clients in the salon, and to operate the salon’s reception systems to book client appointments.

Course content

You will study a number of compulsory units including:

  • Health and Safety
  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
  • Promote products and services to clients in the salon
  • Cut women’s hair Colour and lighten hair Cut men’s hair

You will also choose from a number of optional units including Styling, Plaiting, Perming, Dressing Hair, Cutting Facial Hair, Competitions Work, Scalp Massage and Reception Duties.

Entry requirements

3 GCSEs at grade D or above (in a minimum of three different subject areas) including Maths and English or a Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing and Level 1 Maths and English.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a variety of methods including online testing, assignments, practical assessments in a real working environment and working on reception.

Future opportunities

The majority of our Hairdressing students go on to gain full-time work in the industry, working for local salons, city centre salons, hotels and even on-board luxury cruise liners. If you are passionate and hard-working, you might also progress to university to study a range of degree programmes available in Hair and Make-up for the Media Industries.

The College also works with numerous local salons to offer Apprenticeships in Hairdressing.
