Business AS and A Level at Portsmouth College

Course description

The course offers a comprehensive coverage of the internal and external influences on businesses, as well as the strategies required for success in different environments.  You will gain a broad understanding of business activity in various contexts and develop valuable business linked and generic skills, including decision making and problem solving.

Course content

You will explore businesses from the points of view of owners, managers, customers and employees.  You will learn about the role of managers and the impact of decision making on marketing, operations management, financial management and human resource performance.  You will also gain an understanding of the role of strategic decision making in managing change.  The course will require you to interpret and analyse data, apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations and develop arguments to back your own judgements.

Entry requirements

You would normally be expected to have at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English Language), some at grade B or above. Level 2 BTEC or OCR National qualifications (at Merit grade or higher) would be a useful addition but cannot be used instead of the basic GCSE requirement.

Assessment

There are three external exams for this course, all of which are taken at the end of the second year.  There is no coursework but one exam is based on a case study.

Future opportunities

You will take part in study days with local universities and attend other external visits of relevance to Business Students.
