Chemistry A level at St Dominic's Sixth Form College
The Science Department is a very large department in the college. The success rate is excellent and every year a considerable number of students go on to study science degree courses. The students receive a wealth of support to prepare them for science related degree courses, including preparation for BMAT, UKCAT and Olympiad examinations. The department prides itself on offering a great deal of support to students outside of lesson time.

A level Chemistry (AQA linear)
A level Chemistry is divided into three areas.
Topics studied in the first year, which also apply to AS level are: Atomic structure, Amount of substance, Bonding, Energetics, Kinetics, Chemical equilibria, Oxidation and reduction.
Topics studied in the second year, which apply only to A level are: Thermodynamics, Rate equations, Equilibrium constant Kp, Electrode potentials, Acids and bases.
Topics studied in the first year, which also apply to AS level are: Periodicity, Group II, Group VII.
Topics studied in the second year, which apply only to A level are: Period 3 elements and oxides, Transition metals, Aqueous ions.
Topics studied in the first year, which also apply to AS level are: Introduction to organic chemistry, Alkanes, Alkenes, Haloalkanes, Alcohols, Organic analysis.
Topics studied in the second year, which only apply to A level are: Optical isomerism, Aldehydes and ketones, Carboxylic acids and their derivatives, Aromatic chemistry, Amines, Polymers, Amino acids and proteins, Organic synthesis, Nmr, Chromatography.
7 GCSEs at C or above, including Englsh Language, and
B in mathematics, and BB in science double
