Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering at Stoke Studio College

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering is a 180 credit qualification that consists of six mandatory units plus eleven additional units.  This qualification is broadly equivalent to three A levels.

 

Course content

Students will complete six mandatory units selected from:

Year One

  • Health & Safety in the Engineering Workplace
  • Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
  • Mechanical Principles and Applications
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles

Year Two

  • Communications for Engineering Technicians
  • Engineering Project
  • Fabrication Process and Technology
  • Selecting and Using Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Applications of Computer Numerical Control in Engineering
  • Further Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
  • Computer Aided Drafting
  • Electro, Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems and Devices

Eleven additional units would range from:

Year One

  • Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials
  • Engineering Drawing for Technicians
  • Engineering Secondary and Finishing Techniques and Processes
  • Principles and Applications of Electronic Devices and Circuits
  • Electronic Measurement and Testing

Year Two

  • Fabrication Process and Technology
  • Selecting and Using Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Applications of Computer Numerical Control in Engineering
  • Further Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
  • Computer Aided Drafting
  • Electro, Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems and Devices

Entry requirements

To access the Level 3 qualifications we offer (BTEC Level 3 Extended Diplomas) you will need to have achieved or be predicted to achieve at least five GCSEs at grade C or above including English and maths.  If you are applying whilst you are in Year 11 and have not yet completed your GCSEs a conditional offer will be made linked to agreed outcomes in your Key Stage 4 results.

Assessment

Learning is achieved through the completion of projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

Free breakfast

At the Studio College we offer a free breakfast club for all our students arriving before 8:40am daily, where they can get 2 slices of toast, egg or beans and a hot drink before starting their classes.

Reduced cost bus travel

Smart Pass - Anyone who lives within Stoke on Trent and plans to travel within Stoke on Trent can apply for a Smart Pass. It can be used 7 days a week and saves the hassle of wondering about the cost of your journeys. 

Subsidised travel - There is also travel support available for students who:

live over 3 miles away from the college

live in a household with total earnings less than £20,000 per year

live independently and claim income support

are 16 - 18 years old.
