Wood Occupations (Carpentry and Joinery) Diplomas Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 at York College

Course description

Level 1 units include:
 

  • Safe Working Practices in Construction Level 1
  • Information, Quantities and Communications Level 1
  • Knowledge of Building Construction Level 1
  • Woodworking Joints and Timber Technology
  • How to Use and Maintain Carpentry and Joinery Hand Tools
  • How to Use Portable Power Tools

All students will be expected to work towards completion of a Level 2 English and Maths qualification (as required) alongside this course to enable progression onto the Diploma Level 2.

Level 2 units include either:
 

Site Route:
  • Safe Working Practices in Construction Level 2
  • Information, Quantities and Communications Level 2
  • Knowledge of Building Construction Level 2
  • How to Carry Out First Fixing (floors, stairs, roofs)
  • How to Carry Out Second Fixing (doors, architraves, skirting, kitchen units)
  • How to Erect Timber Partitions
  • How to Carry Out Repairs and Maintenance
  • How to Operate a Circular Saw

Or
 

Bench Route:
  • Safe Working Practices in Construction Level 2
  • Information, Quantities and Communications Level 2
  • Knowledge of Building Construction Level 2
  • How to Draw and Set Out Joinery Items
  • How to Mark Out Timber from Setting Out Drawings
  • How to Make Doors and Windows
  • How to Set Up and Operate a Circular Saw

Level 3 units include either:

 

Site Route:
  • Safe Working Practices in Construction Level 3
  • Information, Quantities and Communications Level 3
  • Knowledge of Building Construction Level 3
  • How to Build and Erect Timber Roof Structures
  • How to Maintain and Repair Timber Structures
  • How to Use Portable and Fixed Wood Machines

Or



Bench Route:

  • Safe Working Practices in Construction Level 3
  • Information, Quantities and Communications Level 3
  • Knowledge of Building Construction Level 3
  • How to Use Portable and Fixed Wood Machines
  • How to Make Curved and Shaped Doors and Windows

Entry requirements

Applicants for the Level 1 Diploma should ideally have a minimum of 4 Ds at GCSE including Maths and English (grade 3+), and will be assessed and interviewed prior to acceptance on to the course. Level 1 must be completed before progressing to the Level 2 Diploma and then Level 3.

Assessment

The Diploma is assessed using both practical and online multi-choice tests.

Future opportunities

On completion of each Diploma students can progress onto the next level where appropriate, or go on to find employment in order to transfer to an apprenticeship, then higher level courses in Construction.
