Biology at Uplands Community College School Sixth Form

Course description

This course gives students the opportunity to study Biology with reference to the fundamental principles and concepts that underpin the subject.  The course is designed to deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of all variables that determine the abundance of life forms. 


Students studying Biology often study one or more of Chemistry, Mathematics and English.

Course content

You will study aspects of Cytology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Human Biology and Ecology.


Lessons are varied with teacher-led activities, group work, research opportunities and practical work.

Entry requirements

5 A* - C grades at GCSE.  Students are required to have grade A in Core Science and at least grade B overall.  In addition, grade B in both English and Mathematics is advised, as Biology assessments require extended writing and manipulation of data.

Future opportunities

Students who have recently studied Biology at Uplands have gone on to study Medicine, Patent Law, Physiotherapy, Biochemistry and Sports Science.  Many students have progressed to do postgraduate studies, or work in various fields including the City, Medical Services, Pharmaceutical Research and Government Scientific Establishments.

    • Wadhurst is situated on the Kent/Sussex border seven miles (11 km) east of Crowborough and about seven miles (11 km) south of Tunbridge Wells.  It is also within easy reach of Ticehurst, Burwash, Mayfield and Heathfield in East Sussex, and Lamberhurst, Hawkhurst and Cranbrook in Kent.


      There is limited parking available on the College site during the day.  Visitors travelling by car may prefer to park in the public car park, which is situated next to the Greyhound Pub in the High Street, adjacent to the College. 


      Uplands is a Community College and we have a Sports Centre on-site, which is open to the public and a Youth Centre across the road.  The entire College site, including the Sports Centre is a non-smoking environment. 

      The College is:

      • Within easy reach of the A21


      • Approximately 1 mile from Wadhurst Railway Station


      • Served by bus routes from the surrounding towns/villages


      • Located within the centre of Wadhurst; Sixth Form students are permitted to visit the local shops during study periods and break/lunchtime
