Skills for Sport (Lilleshall) at Derby College

Course description

This study programme develops the learner's knowledge of the active sport and leisure industry. Emphasis is placed on skills development at this level, so a supportive programme of maths for fitness and exercise and sports communication and language is compulsory. This is a one-year programme which will include a resit in either GCSE Maths or English.

This course has been developed to allow learners the option to study over two years in order to gain their GCSEs in English and Maths before progressing to higher level courses. Ask us for further details on how to do this.

Course content

The programme is developed to increase your understanding in the following units:
  • Fitness for Sport and Exercise
  • Practical Sports Performance
  • Sports Communication and Language
  • The Sports Performer in Action
  • Leading Sports Activities
  • Maths for Fitness and Exercise
  • Anatomy and Physiology
A GCSE resit in Maths or English will be a compulsory element of the course for learners with a D grade in either of these subjects. Work experience, tutorial and sport training sessions will be part of your timetable.
You will develop your skills in maths and English to support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills.

Entry requirements

The course is designed for learners with mid-level GCSE grades who have achieved a D grade in either English or Maths. The entry profile for this course is five GCSEs between grades C to E. Candidates will be invited for an interview and screening test as part of the application process. You are welcome to attend the Sports Information Evenings held at the College throughout the year for further details.

It is essential that you show a commitment to maintaining high standards of behaviour and attendance and to meeting deadlines. A healthy and active lifestyle is expected.

Assessment methods will vary. You are expected to build a portfolio of evidence for each unit and assessments will include presentations, essays, workbooks, discussions, practical performance, viva, physical testing and externally set exam assessments.

You are expected to meet deadlines and work on multiple tasks throughout the year. You should also maintain a high level of discipline, attendance and time keeping to successfully complete the full programme of study. Maths and English will be assessed through course work, a controlled assessment or final exam.

Future opportunities

Further study
Learners can move on to other sport courses, to gym instruction courses or to courses in other subjects to develop their skills further. This will be dependent on their attendance, behaviour and references from teaching staff and the completion of the GCSE programmes. It is possible to extend your study at this level to complete a further GCSE resit in the requisite subject.
Courses that would be suitable include:
  • Diploma in Health, Fitness and Exercise Instruction
  • Diploma in Promoting Health and Wellbeing
  • Sports Coaching and Development
  • Sports Science and Advanced Research
  • Leadership and Security Skills for Public Services
This course represents a forward step towards a wide range of
careers in the dynamic sports industry, for example as a sports coach, sports leader, fitness instructor, sports development assistant, facility manager or PE teacher.
