Mathematics A-Level at Oakgrove School

Course description

In Year 12, students will study 3 units, each of which has an equal weighting. In Year 13, students will study a further 3 units, each of which has an equal weighting.

Course content

All students will study Core 1 and Core 2. These units contain a lot of work on algebra, as well as trigonometry. The core maths supports other branches of Mathematics, as well as being an area of mathematics in itself. Students will also study Statistics 1 alongside these. Statistics 1 builds on the data handling that is studied at GCSE.

All students will study Core 3 and Core 4. These units build on the core topics that they studied in year 12. Students will also study Mechanics 1 alongside this. This will enable students to experience another branch of Mathematics.

Assessment

Students will sit three exams at the end of year 12 as follows:

  • Core 1 (MPC1)
  • Core 2 (MPC2)
  • Statistics 1 (MS/SS1B)

Each exam is worth a third of the AS Grade.

Each exam is 90 minutes long and consists of approximately 8 compulsory questions.

Graphical calculators are allowed in the Core 2 and Statistics 1 exams. Core 1 is a noncalculator exam.

Students will sit three exams at the end of year 13 as follows:

  • Core 3 (MPC3)
  • Core 4 (MPC4)
  • Mechanics 1 (MM1B)

Each exam is worth a third of the A2 Grade.

Each exam is 90 minutes long and consists of approximately 8 compulsory questions.
